Breathing Technique Can Be Alternative For Steroids

As an asthma patient, you should have been familiar with steroids and other asthma pharmaceutical medication. Yes, when asthma attacks you, these kinds of medication will be your first help to save your life. However, steroids also have negative effect such as
bone density decreasing, eye problem or problems on child’s growth.

Few days ago Jane E. Brody wrote on New York Times about how a breathing techniques, that is called Buteyko method, can help people with asthma. Buteyko is not new in asthma natural cure method. But with the dangers of using steroids as Jane told us in her writing, I think this breathing technique is worth your consideration.

Jane said that his friend, David Wiebe, 58 years had suffered from asthma for 48 years. Bronchodillator and steroids have been his ‘good friend’ each time he gets asthma attack. However, ten years ago he noticed that his sight was worsening, eventually diagnosed as a form of macular degeneration caused by the steroids. Two leading retina specialists told him to stop using the drugs if he wanted to preserve his sight.

He did it, however when asthma attacks, he was forced to take steroids again in order to save his live. “After having a really poor couple of years with significantly reduced quality of life and performance at work,” he told Jane, “I was ready to give up my eyesight and go back on steroids just so I could breathe better.”

Then, last spring, someone told him about the Buteyko method, a shallow-breathing technique developed in 1952 by a Russian doctor, Konstantin Buteyko. From a video in YouTube, David learned about two people who have previously suffered from asthma, were able to cut of 75% of their medication after having practiced Buteyko method.

Before having Buteyko method, he was using his rescue inhaler 20 or more times in a 24-hour period. However three months after a series of lessons and refresher sessions in shallow breathing, David only use less than one puff of the inhaler each day and no drugs.

For a complete reference, read the complete article in New York Times, and learn more about Buteyko Method, as well as other asthma natural cure methods.
