Egg Allergy

Find Out How We Can Live Happily With Egg Allergy

Egg allergy, how dangerous is it actually ? The reaction to egg allergy can be different, but the most severe and dangerous one is anaphylaxis. Therefore, keep your loved ones away from the dangerous attack by keeping on reading with me the whole stories about egg allergy…

According to Wikipedia, egg allergy is “a type of food allergy. It is a hypersensitivity to dietary substances from the yolk or whites of eggs, causing an overreaction of the immune system which may lead to severe physical symptoms for millions of people around the world.”

Egg allergy is a condition when a person who has egg allergy have his/her body's immune system overreacts to proteins in the egg. The reaction could only be to white egg, or in some cases, also in the yolk egg.

This is what really happens in your body: the immune system responds by creating specific antibodies to that food, which are designed to fight off the “stranger”. These antibodies — called immunoglobulin E (IgE) — trigger the release of certain chemicals into the body. So when someone with egg allergy eats food that contains eggs, the immune system unleashes chemicals to protect the body. The release of these chemicals can affect the respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, skin, and the cardiovascular system — causing egg allergy symptoms like wheezing, nausea, headache, stomach-ache, and itchy hives.

Egg Allergy Diet

I also have egg allergy, and the first symptoms is usually swelling around my throat, then becomes airways infection. That makes me going on a strictly diet with no egg in my menu. And, trust me, it’s not easy! Because most of foods in deli or supermarket such as cakes, bread, cookies, ice cream, puddings, even salad dressing use eggs as one of the ingredients. The solution? My mother (she also had egg allergy and asthma – find out more about this in my About Me page) tried to create a homemade pudding with no egg, which both of us can enjoy together, and which I’m now happy to share it with you…

But if you want to bake your own cakes for your lovely families who have egg allergy, these are several alternatives to substitute egg,

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder + 1 tablespoon liquid + 1 tablespoon vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon yeast dissolved in ¼ cup warm water

  • 1½ tablespoons water + 1½ tablespoons oil + 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 packet gelatin + 2 tablespoons warm water (don't mix until ready to use)

  • 1 tablespoon pureed fruit such as apricots or bananas

Use those substitutes for no more than 3 eggs in the original recipe.

When you eat in restaurants, always ask the waiter or the chef about egg contents in food you’d like to order. When you buy foods in the market, always read the content labels very thoroughly.

Or…you can have fun by cooking your families favorite egg free desserts using these recipes…
