Excess Exercise

Learn About How Excess Exercise Could Worsen Your Asthma!

Excess exercise is one of asthma triggers that many people often confused with. In a way, exercise or sport is good for human's health, however on the other side, if you are an asthma patient, exercise could become one of asthma trigger if you overdo it.

Having exercise is still good for every human being. It increases our self-confidence, physical and psychological health. Even for an asthma patient, if you can manage your

asthma well, you can do any physical sports without any difficulties. However, you should always pay attention to your asthma condition.

The Relation Between Excess Exercise and Bronchospasm

Bronchospasm is a temporary spasm on the bronchial caused by airway narrower. For many years scientists have been discussing how exercise can trigger bronchospasm, and finally came to conclusion that exercise increases the need of oxygen. This condition will increase patient's breathing level, which at the end will cool and dry his airway, and trigger asthma attack. Bronchospasm that is caused by excess exercise called EIB (Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm). EIB also attacks people who is not asthma patient, but have a hypersensitive airway.

EIB Symptoms

On asthma-extrinsic patient :

The EIB symptoms appear quite significantly, such as short breath or breathless.

On asthma-intrinsic patient :

The symptoms don't appear significantly, such as cold, cough, breathless, tiredness, lack of energy, and sickness.

EIB Attack

EIB attack could appear in 3 levels:

Early Level

This is the worst level. The EIB attack could start during exercise, 15 minutes after you start. In other cases it could begin 6-8 minutes after a heavy exercise, get worse for about 5-10 minutes, but then stopped after 30-60 minutes.

Refractory Level

50% of asthma patients never have bronchospasm in 30-90 minutes after early EIB attack there. That's why a lot of athletes with asthma keep continuing their exercise during the refractory attack, as the symptoms will get disappeared after they finish the exercise.

End Level

End level is the lightest level.

On certain cases, this level never even appear.

If it does appears, the attack will start 12-16 hours after the exercise, and will disappear in 24 hours.

How To Reduce EIB ?

1. Don't have any kind of sport or exercise when having an asthma symptoms!

2. Consume medicines to prevent EIB before having exercise.
Just make sure not to consume prohibited medicine that contain caffeine. Bronchodilator is quite safe.

3. Have enough warm up
You can choose from stretching, walking or short running on the treadmill for approx. 30 seconds. Take a break for another 60 seconds, then repeat the exercise for 2-3 times. Remember, warming up period for asthma patient is a little longer than for normal people.

4. Choose a suitable exercise
Non-aerobic exercise such as walking, biking or weight lifting could be your choices. Start form low level, and increase gradually depend on your stamina. Swimming is the best choice for asthma patient, indoor pool is better. Other sports you can choose are tennis, baseball, volley or golf.

5. Avoid asthma trigger
Avoid having contact with any asthma trigger before and during your exercise.

6. Enough Cooling Down
Don't stop your exercise immediately, to avoid immediate climate change on your airway. Have at least 10 minutes cooling down after finishing your exercise.

7. Avoid certain food before exercise
Do not consume these foods several hours before having exercise : prawn, celery, nuts, white egg, almond and banana.
